Computer system requirements
You may choose to run Voice Services on a dedicated machine. This machine must meet the following minimum specifications.
Note
If you prefer to run Voice Services on the same machine as your FirstClass server and/or Internet Services, the following minimum specifications must be added to the system requirements of the other components. Minimum system requirements for the FirstClass server, Internet Services and the FirstClass client can be found in FirstClass Administrator's Guide (Business Edition/Education Edition).
•       Windows NT Workstation 4.0 or Windows 2000
This should be a no-frills machine with only a standard video and a network card installed in order to free system resources for the Voice Services components.
This machine can be gatewayed to a FirstClass server running on a Mac OS.
•       processor:
your required processor speed depends on the Voice Services hardware you are using:
Hardware                                                                       Processor speed
1 Brooktrout card                                          PII - 233
2-3 Brooktrout cards                                PIII - 500
4 or more Brooktrout cards      Dual processor or faster
•       10 GB internal hard disk space
•       256 MB RAM (memory required will increase with the number of ports)
•       one ISA slot for a Connected Systems PBXLink ISA or Connected Systems PBXLink ISA 4x4 (if applicable)

•       one ISA or PCI slot (as applicable) available for each Brooktrout card - ensure you have the correct type and number of slots available
•       FirstClass client from the same release as your server installed on the Voice Services machine.

Telephony hardware requirements
From the following table, find your PBX type and then go to the corresponding section below to determine your telephony hardware requirements:
PBX type                                                         Section
Nortel Meridian 1
PBX and SMDI
Nortel Norstar
PBX and SMDI
Mitel SX-50, SX-200, SX-2000
PBX and SMDI
Lucent Definity
PBX and SMDI
Centrex with direct SMDI
PBX and SMDI
Nortel Meridian SL-100 with SMDI        Direct incoming SMDI
Nortel Meridian DMS-100 with SMDI       Direct incoming SMDI
Centrex with no incoming SMDI          Voice Services without SMDI
PBX and SMDI
Ensure you have the following hardware installed before installing and configuring Voice Services:
PBX
Voice Services works with the following PBXs:
•       Nortel Meridian 1
•       Nortel Norstar
•       Lucent Definity
•       Mitel SX-50, SX-200, and SX-2000.
Connected Systems PBXLinks
The Connected Systems PBXLink provides Voice Services with SMDI information. There are five types of Connected Systems PBXLinks that can be used with Voice Services. See the table below to determine which Connected Systems PBXLink works with your PBX.
Note
If you have a Centrex system, or another direct analog switching system (SL-100, DMS-100) with a direct incoming SMDI line, you do not require a Connected Systems PBXLink. Go to Direct incoming SMDI.
Connected Systems PBXLink                            Compatible PBX
Connected Systems PBXLink                            Lucent Definity
                                                                                     Nortel Meridian 1
Connected Systems PBXLink ISA                 Lucent Definity
                                                                                     Nortel Meridian 1
Connected Systems PBXLink ISA 4x4              Mitel SX-50, SX-200, SX-2000
                                                                                     Nortel Norstar
Connected Systems PBXLink DMI-4        Mitel SX-50
                                                                                     Nortel Norstar
Connected Systems PBXLink DMI-4 Plus    Nortel Meridian 1
                                                                                     Mitel SX-200, SX-2000
Digital line
For the Connected Systems PBXLink to link your incoming calls to Voice Services, you need a digital line.
Brooktrout card
Voice Services is designed to work with TR 114 4L analog Brooktrout cards. You can use ISA or PCI cards. We recommend PCI. Whichever type of card you choose, make sure your machine has both the correct number and the correct type of slots.
Use the chart below to determine the number of Brooktrout cards you require, based on the number of users on your system.
Note
The following guidelines should be used as rough estimates only. Your specific requirements will depend on your telephone usage during peak times. Be sure to make allowances for busier phone systems. For example, a sales office will most likely receive more calls than a typical accounting office, and will therefore require more ports.
Number of users        # of Ports            Brooktrout cards
50 - 100                                    4                                  1
100-350                             8                                  2
350-650                             12                                 3
650-1000                                    16                                 4
1000-1750                            20                                 5
1750-3000                            24                                 6
Analog lines
If you are using a Nortel Meridian 1 or a Lucent Definity PBX, you need four analog lines for each Brooktrout card installed. These lines link your Brooktrout card(s) to your PBX. (One Brooktrout card contains 4 ports, each requiring an analog line.)

Direct incoming SMDI
Ensure you have the following hardware installed before installing and configuring Voice Services:
Phone system
Voice Services works with the following systems:
•       Centrex with a direct incoming SMDI line
•       Nortel Meridian SL-100 with a direct incoming SMDI line
•       Nortel Meridian DMS-100 with a direct incoming SMDI line.
Connected Systems PBXLink
You do not require any type of Connected Systems PBXLink for this configuration since the SMDI information is sent direct from the switch.
Brooktrout card
Voice Services is designed to work with TR 114 4L analog Brooktrout cards. You can use ISA or PCI cards. We recommend PCI. Whichever type of card you choose for your system, make sure your machine has both the correct number and the correct type of slots.
Based on call volume, determine the number of ports required. This will be the number of incoming lines you have from the switch.
Each Brooktrout card contains four ports and can therefore handle one to four lines.
Analog lines
All of your incoming lines must be analog lines to connect directly to the Brooktrout card(s).

Voice Services with no PBX or SMDI
You can run Voice Services without a PBX or an incoming SMDI line, however you will not have caller number, called number, or type of call information passed to Voice Services. While this will limit some call answering options, it is a cost-effective solution for small organizations who do not wish to install a PBX, or for organizations using Centrex who do not wish to install a direct incoming SMDI line.
Connected Systems PBXLink
You do not require any type of Connected Systems PBXLink for this configuration.
You can dedicate ports for call answering (including voice menus), FirstClass Mailbox logins, and Express Delivery.
Each Brooktrout card contains four ports and can therefore handle one to four lines.
Analog lines
All of your incoming lines must be analog lines to connect directly to the Brooktrout card(s).
